Fr. Josiah Trenham on the Arizona Conference Venue (from his 2021 Keynote address):

“This is my third or fourth time at the Saint Kosmas Conference, but the first time at this venue in Gold Canyon and what a splendid venue it is! As I was standing on the porch of our room last night, here at the resort, watching that incredible sunset—the sunset was just magnificent, calling us to sing “O Gladsome Light”—my heart was blessed.” — Archpriest Josiah Trenham

REVIEWS of the 2021 Saint Kosmas Conference at Gold Canyon Golf Resort

The 2021 Saint Kosmas Conference in Gold Canyon, Arizona, was attended by 320 people, representing 120 families from 20 states, and representing at least six Orthodox jurisdictions.

From an Exhibitor:

This conference was amazing! Life-changing!

From an attending Priest:

I pray that God will bless this work! This is a vital service for Orthodox families. I pray that God will strengthen those who make this conference happen, and that He will reward them 100-fold!

From a Speaker:

I truly enjoyed my time as both a presenter and as a participant. Having seen how seriously the Orthodox community takes the education of their children and students, I can say that I feel truly honored to have been asked to be a presenter.

From an Attending Family:

The entire conference was incredible experience of encouragement, recreation, recalibration, conviction, and tremendous joy. I could write three separate essays: one on the terrific accommodations at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort, another on the wonderfully prepared Lenten meals, and yet a more elaborate description of the UN-BE-LIEVE-A-BLE and PRICE-LESS lectures. I was especially delighted to visit each one of the vendors; so powerfully equipped! The children had a fantastic time, and on the drive back to Los Angeles they expressed that this conference is the place they found true, life-long friends. As I write this, there are three teenagers checking in on me, inquiring if I’ve yet signed us up for the 2022 conference. Now that’s an endorsement if I ever saw one! My deepest appreciation goes out to all the unseen hands that make this super-production happen. [Read more.]

From the RESORT Events Manager:

The staff couldn’t stop talking about how nice the children were at the Saint Kosmas event. They were the best-behaved children we’ve had here at the resort. Everyone at the Saint Kosmas Conference was so polite and thanked us repeatedly. It’s sad that we’re not used to this, but it was a fabulous experience for all of us here at Gold Canyon Golf Resort. I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep it up!!!! We walked away from this event feeling like there’s still hope for this world. What a great group! We can’t wait for next year!!!!

from Fr. Josiah Trehnam

(on the Arizona Conference and venue, stated in his 2021 Keynote):

I am absolutely filled with joy to be here at the 2021 Saint Kosmas Orthodox Education Conference in Gold Canyon, Arizona. It is so encouraging for a priest to see families so enthusiastic and so devoted to serving the Church and raising their children in the love of God, close to the Church and living the Christian life. This is my third or fourth time at the Saint Kosmas Conference, but the first time at this venue in Gold Canyon and what a splendid venue it is! As I was standing on the porch of our room last night, here at the resort, watching that incredible sunset—the sunset was just magnificent, calling us to sing “O Gladsome Light”—my heart was blessed.

CHILDREN AGES 5 to 14 — We are excited to announce the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference CHILDREN’S PROGRAM which includes three days of Arts & Crafts projects, Outdoor Sessions of Archery and Astronomy, as well as “Talks with the Youth.” Arts & Crafts Projects include: Collage Card-Making project (Paschal theme), Watercolor (Paschal theme), Decorate a Pascha Candle, Decorate a Wooden Egg with Traditional Ukrainian Designs, Personalize a water bottle and back pack, Weaving project, Crochet project, and much more! (See schedule of activities below.) We will be admitting a maximum of 100 children between the ages of 5 and 14 to register for the 2022 Children’s Program. The Children’s Program (ages 5-14) will be divided into 4 “cohorts” (Groups A - D) who will rotate through the various activities as a group of 25 children per cohort. (See rotation schedule below). Each cohort will have a minimum of 3 adult staff members with them at all times: one cohort lead who will stay with each group as they move between activities, and two activity leads who will remain at each activity station serving as instructors for the projects. Note: as of December 1, we are already at a quarter capacity for the children’s program. Register today! Scroll down for pricing.

Children ages 0-4

CHILDREN AGES 0-4 may participate in the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference while in the care of their parents. Based on our past experience, children in this age category, need to be with a parent or adult that is familiar to them. In order to make it possible for parents to get as much from the conference lectures as possible while still caring for their little ones, we will provide a carpeted toddler/preschool play area (with toys, books, and coloring supplies) in the Geronimo A meeting room which will be the location of all of the primary homeschool sessions. In addition, the keynote lectures will be live-streamed to Geronimo A so that parents can hear the keynote presentations while caring for active little ones. This will also give parents with children under age 5 a relaxed place to connect with other parents of children the same age. Admission to Geronimo A will require that both parent and child be registered for the conference. Families are also welcome to bring a babysitter with them to the conference to care for their toddlers and preschoolers while the parent is in lectures. For policy and rates related to registering a babysitter to accompany your family at the conference, contact us.

Raising Children in a Post-Covid World

ARCHPRIEST JOSIAH TRENHAM, PH.D.

Session: 1
Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2022
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
LOCATION: MAIN LECTURE HALL (South Campus)

The events of the last year have only intensified the divisions that exist within our culture.  Voices openly hostile to the Christian faith have only grown louder and present continued challenges in raising our children faithfully.  One only has to observe the persistent attempts of hypersexualizing our children through technology, education, and media/politics to see the challenge in front of us.  Join Fr. Josiah as he presents a vision forward for Orthodox parents and educators in finding the royal path in the midst of a darkening world.

Heart and Mind
in the Thought of St. Nektarios of Aegina

FR. JOHN PALMER, PH.D.

Session: 2
Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2022
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM
LOCATION: MAIN LECTURE HALL (South Campus)

St. Nektarios is one of the most beloved saints of the 20th century who was directly involved in the education of children. Recently, Fr. John Palmer has translated important talks by St. Nektarios on the topic of education. Join Fr. John Palmer as he walks us through St. Nektarios’ articulation of Orthodox education and the critical relationship between heart and mind in the formation of the child.

Higher Education, 21st Century America, and Orthodox Christianity: Understanding the Reality Before Us

JOHN MARK REYNOLDS, PH.D.

Session: 3
Date: Thursday, March 17, 2022
Time: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
LOCATION: MAIN LECTURE HALL (South Campus)

The current state of higher education in America should be of concern for every Orthodox Christian, especially for those raising and educating children today.  Dr. John Mark Reynolds, former provost of Houston Baptist University, founder and director of the Torrey Honors Institute, the Socratic, great books-centered honors program at Biola University, and current President of The Saint Constantine School has many years of experience in the higher education space. Join Dr. Reynolds as he discusses the current state of higher education in America and ways in which Orthodox Christians should be responding to the challenges presented before us.

The Formation of the Child in the Thought of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian

MARK TARPLEY, PH.D.

Session: 4
Date: Thursday, March 17, 2022
Time: 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM
LOCATION: MAIN LECTURE HALL (South Campus)

St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian offer wisdom to parents, homeschooling families, and schools in the formation of the child.  Their practical instruction within the context of the liturgical, ascetical, and sacramental life of the Church offers us the nourishment and guidance to faithfully form our children - both heart and mind - from the earliest ages forward.  Join Mark Tarpley as he offers us the vision of Christian Paideia (the formation of the Christian child) in the thought of Sts. Basil the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian.

Seeking Purity in an Age of Impurity

ARCHPRIEST JOSIAH TRENHAM, PH.D.

Session: 10
Date: Friday, March 18, 2022
Time: 9:00 AM - 9:45 AM
LOCATION: MAIN LECTURE HALL (South Campus)

How do we raise our children in purity within a hypersexualized, pleasure seeking culture?  Perhaps the first place to start is to understand what it means to be pure.  St. John Cassian writes, “The following severe saying is reported of St. Basil, the Bishop of Caesarea: ‘I know not woman and yet I am not a virgin.’ By this he [St. Basil] means that bodily purity consists not so much in forswearing women but in integrity of heart. For it maintains a perpetual incorrupt holiness of heart whether from the fear of God or from love of purity.”  In this session, Fr. Josiah will explore what these profound words given to us by the Holy Fathers mean for raising children today within the current cultural climate.  What is the path towards which “incorrupt holiness of heart” in the day-to-day living of the family is cultivated such that our children can both nurture and preserve their purity?

2022 Saint Kosmas Conference: Frequently Asked Questions

How many attendees do you expect?

As of February 1, 2022, registration for the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference represents 95 families from 21 states. Last year’s Saint Kosmas Conference was attended by 320 people, representing 120 families from 20 states and representing at least six jurisdictions. With registration open for four more weeks, we anticipate the total attendance and total number of families represented this year to exceed that of last year.

Will you offer live-streaming of this conference or an option to attend 'virtually'?

The hallmark of our conferences is bringing people together to create a space for engaging discussion and meaningful fellowship in service to the growth of Orthodox education. We do not live-stream this conference or offer “virtual” attendance.

We will offer a private live-stream of the keynote lectures in one of the conference meeting rooms that will be set up as a space for parents to supervise their youngest children. This meeting room with private live-stream will be available only for parents and children who are registered for the conference.

Will recordings of the conference be made available to the public following the conference?

We will record and post some of the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference presentations on the Saint Kosmas website. These selected presentations will be posted over the course of the year as either transcripts or digital media. Not all sessions will be recorded or available online.

What jurisdiction are you affiliated with?

Saint Kosmas Orthodox Christian Education Association is an independent non-profit organization, not affiliated with or attached to any particular jurisdiction. Likewise, the 2022 Saint Kosmas Arizona Conference is not affiliated with any particular jurisdiction. There will not be any church services held at the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference, but families can participate in the liturgical cycle of the Church during their stay in Arizona by visiting local Phoenix-area churches and monasteries of various jurisdictions.

How late can I register?

General registration will be open until February 28. Registration will not be extended into March for any reason.

Registration for the Children’s Program is open until February 28 or until we reach 100 children between the ages of 5 and 14, whichever comes first. (In 2021, the Children’s Program sold out 2 weeks prior to the close of general registration.)

Exhibitor registration will be open until February 28, or until space in the exhibition hall is sold out, whichever comes first. Some exhibitor package components have an earlier deadline (such as the black and white ad in the program), so to take advantage of the full package, exhibitors should register by February 15. For more information about exhibitor deadlines, view the Exhibitor Information page.

If I cannot attend the entire conference, is there a pro-rated package for partial attendance?

Registered attendees are welcome to attend as few or as many of the seminars as they desire, however, there is no reduced rate for reduced attendance.

Can my child participate in the Oratorical Festival without being registered for the conference?

Participation in the Oratorical Festival requires that the oratorical competitor and at least one parent or guardian of the competitor be registered for the conference and be physically present at the festival.

Can my child participate in the Oratorical Festival via live-stream?

Participation in the Oratorical Festival requires that the oratorical competitor and at least one parent or guardian of the competitor be registered for the conference and be physically present at the festival.

Do you offer scholarships for families with low income?

Unfortunately, we do not receive any outside funding for scholarships. If you, or a family you know, would like to participate in the Saint Kosmas Oratorical Festival or the Saint Kosmas Conference but does not have the financial means to do so, we encourage you to ask your parish priest or petition your parish counsel to sponsor your family to attend the conference. There are parishes in the US who did parish-wide fundraisers this year to pay to send parishioners to the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference, so as to better enable them to serve their local community in the space of Orthodox education. We encourage you to do the same. If you would like to donate to another family’s registration cost, please contact us.

Can I “drop in” to visit out-of-town friends who are attending the conference?

No. If you are not registered for the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference, you are not permitted to be on the private venue space that has been rented by the Saint Kosmas Orthodox Education Association. “Drop-ins” who are not registered for this private event will be asked to leave the conference area. All registered attendees will be issued a registration pass which will be checked at the entry into all presentation sessions, the curriculum fair, the Children’s Arts & Crafts Auditorium, and the children’s archery and “Star Party” sessions.

Can my spouse be at the conference to watch my youngest children without being registered?

Anyone coming to the conference exclusively as a babysitter must be registered as an attending babysitter, whether that is a spouse, grandparent, friend, or teenage child from your family. Every person who will be on the private venue space of the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference is expected to be registered in some form. We have a special registration form for those coming to the conference as an attending babysitter who will not be entering any of the buildings being utilized for the conference. To discuss registration options for those who you would like to bring to the conference solely as an attending babysitter, contact us.

May I distribute promotional literature about my school, co-op, community, company, or non-profit organization at the conference? More specifically, may I solicit for potential enrollees, employees, or financial support for my school or co-op while attending the conference?

To learn more about the approved ways that you may market your resources or educational institution through the Saint Kosmas Conferences, visit the Exhibitor Information page.

To apply to submit printed literature to be included in the Saint Kosmas Conference literature bag that is distributed at the Saint Kosmas Conference to all attendees, contact us. All approved printed promotional materials for the literature bag must be received by the conference administration by February 28, 2022.

Other than the approved, printed promotional materials distributed in the literature bags, the Saint Kosmas Conference allows promotion of educational institutions and resources only if the institution is an approved, registered exhibitor at the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference. For those institutions that are registered exhibitors, the terms of solicitation are defined in their contract, and generally confines all solicitation to the space of the exhibition booth.

For those attendees who are not registered exhibitors, no solicitation is permitted at any time anywhere on the conference venue during the conference. No leafleting is permitted, nor is it permitted for attendees to post advertisements or leave stacks of printed promotional materials lying around at the conference venue.

Are you allowing press coverage or special entry for those who would like to write an article on this event or interview your speakers?

No. This is a private event and we manage our own interviews, marketing, and media coverage.

What is the possibility that the conference will be canceled due to COVID?

Based on the history of the Arizona governor's response to COVID during 2020 and 2021, we do not anticipate any state mandates that would cause the resort to be closed or even limited in function. However, we have taken the following measures to be able to observe any possible COVID protocols that may potentially be required by the state, county, or Church at the time of the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference in March to ensure our ability to hold the conference:

  1. We have secured over 12,000 square feet of indoor meeting room space at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort and approximately the same amount of outdoor meeting space. This amount of space will easily allow us to accommodate social distancing protocols if required at the time of our conference. We will be utilizing the following venues at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort: Kiva Board Room, Kachina Room, Geronimo Room, Towne Hall Square Complex, The Ballroom, Towne Hall Pavilion, and Upper Towne Hall, as well as surrounding lawn areas. Visit the Gold Canyon Golf Resort's "Venue Location" page to learn more about these spacious venues being utilized for the 2022 Saint Kosmas Arizona Conference.

  2. We have arranged for all meals to be served in individual boxed containers and served outdoors. Outdoor dining will take place in the Towne Hall Pavilion and the lawn areas of the Towne Hall Square complex. This will allow us to follow the strictest food service protocols if required, and will also be very practical for families with children. To view the outdoor dining locations, visit the resort's "Venue Location" page.

For more information, visit the Saint Kosmas Conference COVID policy page and the Gold Canyon Golf Resort COVID policy page.

Gold Canyon Golf Resort is also taking appropriate measures to ensure the health and safety of their guests. To view the resort's COVID policies, visit their "COVID19" page.

COVID Cancellation Policy

If government regulations related to COVID force a cancellation of the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference, (OR if the 2022 Saint Kosmas Conference is cancelled for any reason), all registration payments will be refunded in full automatically, guaranteed. Based on the history of the Arizona governor's response to COVID during 2020 and 2021, we do not anticipate this happening. Gold Canyon Golf Resort is located in Pinal County and is therefore subject to the COVID regulations of Pinal County, and not the COVID regulations of Maricopa county.
